BOMA BUILDERS
Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10
A boma is a fortified structure that is used in the African wild to keep out predators so that the “enemy” cannot penetrate. It provides safety and protection because the enemy that seeks out whatever is inside of this structure cannot get through the thick briars and thorns of this tightly knit form. It gives us a good picture of what a “hedge of thorns” might look like.
The Psalmist, David, asks in Psalm 119:9 a simple question, “How can a young man cleanse his way?” and readily answers, “By taking heed according to Your word.”
The answer to this profound but important question lies in the directive to “take heed”. Other translations of the Bible liken this to guarding our way by being observant, obeying, keeping and living out God’s Word. This means we keep watch and guard our path, our way, with God’s holy commands, like a “hedge of thorns” about us. It is easy to see the comparison of the boma structure and guarding. It is easy to see how this guard offers protection and safety.
Proverbs 4:23 reminds us, Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life. We are to guard our hearts above everything else, with all diligence; like a vigilante who will not allow an offense or penetration from the enemy to enter.
We construct bomas about us to protect and guard us from the battering of the enemy who seeks to kill, steal, and destroy us. The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. John 10:10.
Building bomas takes hard work, but walking in the ways or paths of God, builds our bomas one thorny layer at a time. A great prayer of security and protection is to pray and claim Psalm 139:5. You have hedged me behind and before and laid Your hand upon me. When our mighty God “hedges” us in, He is not only with us, laying his mighty hand upon us, but He is before us and behind us. He is building up a mighty barrier of protection and safety. This boma is being built all around us, around our minds, our hearts, our words, our actions, so that the enemy CANNOT penetrate! And that is the best safety and protection we could ever hope for.
