LOST IN THE WILDERNESS OF LIFE?

LOST IN THE WILDERNESS OF LIFE?

Have you come to a wilderness place? Almost all of us do. The truth is most people come to God/Jesus at their lowest point in life. Note, the sentence includes the words, “most people.” Realize, you have a lot of company. You might want to start asking around, “What was your lowest point in life.” Your eyes might be opened by the responses of those you question.

Sometimes the wilderness is literal—like at the beginning of Jesus’ ministry when he went into the desert after His baptism and confronted the devil with what He now knew to be true! Sometimes our wilderness is mental and we need to ask God to help us see more clearly so we can, like Jesus, make the demon go away.

If you need to see more clearly, you can start with Paul’s letter to the early Colossian church. He gave us a terrific launching point of pondering who Jesus is. Here are some PowerPoint excerpts:

  • Christ Jesus is the image of the invisible God.
  • All things were created through Him and for Him.
  • In Him all things hold together.
  • He is the Head of the Body, the Church.
  • In Him all the fulness [of God] was pleased to dwell.

[The above verses can be found in the Bible, specifically, in “The Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Colossians.” beginning at verse 15.]

To know God better, you should, “humble yourself under the mighty hand of God, [so] that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” 1 Peter 5:6-9.

Did you catch these words: God exalts. The devil devours. Think about that. Exalt means to lift up, to promote, raise, ennoble, elate as with pride or joy. To devour, means to eat up voraciously, consume wantonly, take greedily, to absorb or engross wholly.

It is interesting that after the word “devour” in my Random House College Dictionary, comes the word, devout” meaning to express devotion. Worship. The question is, who do you want to devote the rest of your life to? A God who wants to exalt you or the devil who wants devour you?
